The Position:

Cardozo seeks an experienced and successful fundraising leader. The Senior Director of IA & Alumni Affairs will be responsible for the overall leadership and strategic planning for fundraising, alumni relations, and stewardship at the Cardozo School of Law and will have primary responsibility for raising private, philanthropic funds through a wide range of fundraising initiatives.


  • Serve on the Dean’s leadership team and provide professional guidance and strategic leadership in identifying and executing strategies that are most likely to be achieved through private philanthropy.
  • Develop and implement strategies that will lead to and result in successful gift support of the academic priorities of the law school in concert with the philanthropic interest of donors. Set clear direction and priorities for the advancement staff with clearly defined goals, time frames and metrics for each revenue stream.
  • Manage a staff of approximately 8 people, including a Director of IA and a Director of Alumni Affairs.
  • Work with faculty to raise funds to support educational programming and law school clinics.
  • Work with the Dean of the Law School, the University Vice President of Institutional Advancement, selected faculty, administrators, and students to identify, cultivate prospects, and strategize solicitations and define priority needs to be funded through giving.
  • Develop a comprehensive alumni development program that includes committee work, meetings, and a strategic communications plan. Devise and implement effective internal and external messaging and methods of advancement communication.
  • In conjunction with the law school dean, create a strategic fundraising plan for advancement. Monitor results from all income sources. Encourage fundraising staff to maintain prospect pipeline at all levels. Ensure outreach utilizes best practices in annual, major, and planned gift programs to meet fundraising goals.
  • Maintain a dynamic portfolio of high net worth individuals having the ability to make major gifts of $50,000 or more.
  • Maintain a travel schedule of 20% of  time. The majority of the travel will be within NYC metro area, but travel will trips to Los Angeles, San Francisco and South Florida, as well as other locations.
  • Assume primary responsibility for the law school’s Board of Overseers: develop agenda, objectives and strategies.


Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (law degree a plus) and 8+ yrs. experience in fundraising. Higher education experience a plus, but not a requirement
  • A proven track record of success in the field of institutional advancement that includes leadership roles in major gift programs, capital campaigns, alumni campaigns or the equivalent
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills with particular sensitivity to sophisticated, high-net worth audiences
  • Impeccable writing, presentation skills, and use of communications and data technologies; a passion for higher education and an understanding of complex institutions
  • An appreciation for and understanding of diverse audiences and communities
  • Experience with endowment campaigns, communications, marketing and branding, and special events
  • Experience managing and uniting a diverse group of professionals using a collaborative style that creates excitement, an expectation of success, and high performance

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to interact successfully both one-on-one and in large group settings.
  • Strategic planning skills marked by creative thinking, extensive research and analysis and practical execution.
  • Awareness of current trends in technology and the ways in which new technologies can be used to support an advancement effort both administratively and through outreach to donors.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of fundraising, communications, and marketing, and the ways in which these three functional areas must integrate seamlessly in order to form a successful, comprehensive advancement effort.
  • Excellent judgement in determining the ability to make appropriate use of resources to further fundraising goals.
