    The Position:

    Reporting to the Associate Dean of Operations and Student Affairs, the Advisor serves as a resource for all undergraduates, particularly first and second-year students, by providing individualized counseling to students, working with them to develop their academic goals, meet academic requirements.

     

    The Advisor coordinates a number of services that promote student academic success and will assist also in the day-to-day operations of the Advising Center.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Serve as liaison between students and Dean’s Office, Registrar’s Office, and faculty
    • Help students transition to university life, and familiarize students with academic policies and procedures
    • Conduct individual conferences with students regarding their academic progress, choice of courses and major, completion of graduation requirements and other academic concerns
    • Assist students in evaluating post-graduation plans, including graduate school options
    • Coordinate students’ pre-registration advising schedule and advising hours
    • Interact and proactively share information with internal and external contacts where appropriate
    • Update publicity materials and department websites to incorporate departmental changes
    • Manage department social media accounts to further communicate information regarding university policies, deadlines, campus events, current events and support services
    • Maintain collaborative relationships with all levels of faculty, professional, and classified staff
    • Other advising and reporting duties as assigned
    • Occasional night and Sunday hours required

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience and Educational Background:

    • Master’s degree required
    • Two years of experience, preferably in Student Academic Services are required

     

    Skills and Competencies:

    • Excellent verbal communication and relationship building skills
    • Effective written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
    • Comfortable working with students, deans, and faculty in one-on-one conversations and groups
    • Proven ability to take independent initiative and work collaboratively as part of a team
    • Capacity to assume responsibility to ensure issues/concerns are addressed and monitored to completion
    • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast paced environment are essential
    • Aptitude for identifying, defining and analyzing information and situations so as to recommend appropriate course of action
    • Effective time and resource management
    • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software, Google Drive, and Google Spreadsheets
    • Experience updating websites and managing social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
